Are Korean Dog Treats Safe? Ingredient Standards and Testing

Korean pet food regulations vs US, MAFRA standards, what to look for on a label, and why Pupsday only ships treats that meet both regulatory bars.

TL;DR

Yes — Korean pet treats from reputable makers are safe, often safer than mass-market US brands. South Korea's MAFRA (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) regulates pet food ingredients strictly. Pupsday only ships treats that meet both MAFRA and FDA/AAFCO standards.

Why Korea has high standards

Pet ownership exploded in Korea over the last decade. The pet-food market has grown alongside it, and MAFRA has tightened ingredient and labeling rules to match. Most Korean pet treats:

  • Use single-ingredient or short-ingredient lists (no fillers).
  • Are made in HACCP-certified facilities (same standard as human food).
  • List every ingredient by quantity in Korean and English on the label.

What to look for

If you're buying Korean treats anywhere (Pupsday or elsewhere), look for:

  1. HACCP certification stamp.
  2. Single or short ingredient list — fewer is better.
  3. Country of origin clearly labeled — "Made in Korea" is a positive signal.
  4. Manufacturing date and best-by — not just an import date.
  5. MAFRA registration number (printed on packaging for treats sold in Korea).

What to avoid

  • Treats with "natural flavoring" without specifics — that's a catch-all for unspecified additives.
  • Imported treats without English ingredient lists.
  • Anything with BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin (banned in some markets, still legal in US pet food).
  • Treats with sugar in the first five ingredients.

What Pupsday does

Every treat in a Pupsday box is:

  • Sourced directly from a HACCP-certified Korean facility.
  • Hand-checked for label accuracy.
  • Tasted by our founder (human) before approval.
  • Tested by Resy (dog) for actual palatability.

If it doesn't pass all four, it doesn't ship.
